Instructions
This year everything is different and so is Maryland Dancesport! For 2021, I’ll be hosting the competition in Baltimore and a separate online competition called, Maryland Dancesport Online!
Here’s what has not changed – we still have favorite events like Best of the Best in Bronze and Silver Ohio Star Ball qualifiers in all four styles plus Fordney events for pre-teens, juniors, and youth. There are also single dances, multi-dance championships pro/am, amateur and student/student competitors. For Professional dancers we are offering Rising Star events in all four styles as well as professional Showdance division.
Maryland Dancesport Online is a member of the World Pro/Am DanceSport series and points will be accrued at Maryland Dancesport Online 2021.
We have a lot that’s new too! With safety rules changing around the world, we offer Solo Stars for Pre-Teen, Junior, Youth and Adult competitors. If you’ve been practicing on your own you can also compete that way, showing off your skill, musicality and expressiveness.
Some schools have implemented ‘no touch’ lessons and we offer No Touch categories where you are partnered, but not touching, for competitors who have been practicing in the ‘no touch’ format.
Here’s how Maryland Dancesport Online is different from other online competitions:
- State of the art technology.
- No music delay.
- No waiting to perform your event.
- Record your dancing at your convenience.
- We use professional video broadcast software on our own dedicated live stream channel.
- We use proprietary software for uploading, tracking and processing your videos.
- We do not depend on public streaming services like Facebook and YouTube.
- The livestream will not be interrupted or blocked because we do not depend on public streaming services.
- The livestream playback will be smooth, not choppy because there is no dependency on your studio’s Internet connection.
Here’s how the competition will run. Once you’ve entered by downloading your forms from our website and submitting them no later than January 15th, we will quickly input your entries into Comp Manager, then send you a link to play the music for each of the heats that you will be dancing.
You can video in the studio or your home, during the time that’s best for you. A smartphone used in landscape mode works perfectly for this. We need to hear the entire piece of music from start to finish and see you from head to toe while the music is playing. No editing is allowed.
All videos must be submitted by the January 22nd video deadline – no exceptions. They will be assembled by heat for judging during the live stream on February 5th & 6th, 2021.
You’ll receive a heat list detailing when your heats will be judged so you can watch yourself compete!
One of the really cool aspects of this type of competition is that our private live stream link on the Maryland Dancesport website is free to you, your friends, and family anywhere in the world. The world class panel of adjudicators will be judging real time during the live stream using the Comp Manager electronic system that they are already familiar with.
Another benefit of an online competition is that the judges see you head to toe throughout your heat. You are never blocked by competitors and you get more eye time online than in a traditional competition.
I know the online experience is different than being with all of our friends – but I want to keep a sense of community so there will be a chat screen available during the entire live stream. You can cheer on your favorite couples, ask questions, and comment as your heart desires. Maryland Dancesport Online will be chatting too!
I can’t wait to see your dancing online and hope you will have fun creating your videos! I you have any outtakes that you’d
Much love,
Amanda
Rules & Regulations
VIDEO REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES
-
All videos must be shot in landscape mode.
-
All videos MUST INCLUDE the audio marker at the beginning of the track (sounds like a ticking clock) and go all the way until the music fades out completely.
-
The use of a gimbal or tripod is recommended.
-
Whole body, including head and feet, must be visible for the duration of the video.
-
Panning from side to side and zooming is allowed. Make sure camera movement is as smooth as possible.
-
No video editing is allowed.
-
Shoot at 29.97 or 30 fps
This is the general default for smartphone cameras. -
Shoot at 1080p.
Most current smartphones shoot at 1080p.
Higher res (i.e. 4K) causes delays and difficulties. -
Use of a smartphone is preferred.
-
Use of professional videography is not recommended.
-
Uploading your video might take a few minutes. Do not exit your browser until upload is complete
-
All Multi-Dance event music has approximately a 25-second gap between dances to allow dancers to catch your breath if you’re wearing a mask. Multi-Dance dances must be danced sequentially so the music is played back uninterrupted in its entirety.
The better we can see you, the easier it is to judge you. Try not to be a tiny spec in the distance, or in a dimly lit studio.
